چکیده

A proper vertex-colouring of a graph G is said to be locally identifying if for any pair u,v of adjacent vertices with distinct closed neighbourhoods, the sets of colours in the closed neighbourhoods of u and v are different. We show that any graph G has a locally identifying colouring with 2∆−3∆+3 colours, where ∆ is the maximum degree of G, answering in a positive way a question asked by Esperet et al. We also provide similar results for locally identifying colourings which have the property that the colours in the neighbourhood of each vertex are all different and apply our method to the class of chordal graphs.

Acyclic and Frugal Colourings of Graphs

Given a graph G = (V,E), a proper vertex colouring of V is t-frugal if no colour appears more than t times in any neighbourhood and is acyclic if each of the bipartite graphs consisting of the edges between any two colour classes is acyclic. For graphs of bounded maximum degree, Hind, Molloy and Reed [14] studied proper t-frugal colourings and Yuster [19] studied acyclic proper 2-frugal colouri...

Deterministic counting of graph colourings using sequences of subgraphs

In this paper we propose a deterministic algorithm for approximate counting the k-colourings of a graph G. We consider two categories of graphs. The first one is the sparse random graphs Gn,d/n, where each edge is chosen independently with probability d/n and d is fixed. The second one is a family we call locally α-dense graphs of bounded maximum degree ∆. A graph G = (V,E) in this family has f...

Acyclic improper colourings of graphs with bounded maximum degree

For graphs of bounded maximum degree, we consider acyclic t-improper colourings, that is, colourings in which each bipartite subgraph consisting of the edges between two colour classes is acyclic and each colour class induces a graph with maximum degree at most t. We consider the supremum, over all graphs of maximum degree at most d, of the acyclic t-improper chromatic number and provide t-impr...

On Decomposing Graphs of Large Minimum Degree into Locally Irregular Subgraphs

A locally irregular graph is a graph whose adjacent vertices have distinct degrees. We say that a graph G can be decomposed into k locally irregular subgraphs if its edge set may be partitioned into k subsets each of which induces a locally irregular subgraph in G. It has been conjectured that apart from the family of exceptions which admit no such decompositions, i.e., odd paths, odd cycles an...

On parcimonious edge-colouring of graphs with maximum degree three

In a graph G of maximum degree ∆ let γ denote the largest fraction of edges that can be ∆ edge-coloured. Albertson and Haas showed that γ ≥ 13 15 when G is cubic . We show here that this result can be extended to graphs with maximum degree 3 with the exception of a graph on 5 vertices. Moreover, there are exactly two graphs with maximum degree 3 (one being obviously the Petersen graph) for whic...
